The City of Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, has a population of 1,005,900 people on the eve of Jerusalem Day 2024, which begins at sundown Tuesday night and lasts until Wednesday evening. This is according to the 38th annual report on the city released by the Jerusalem Institute for Policy Research.
Also, Jerusalem has double the population of Israel’s second most populous city Tel Aviv.

7,600 new immigrants to Israel settled in Jerusalem in the past year.
Jerusalem is also a center of academic learning in Israel. According to the report, 41,300 students were enrolled in institutions of higher learning during the 2022-2023 academic year.
In addition, Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) also released its data on the population of Jerusalem ahead of Jerusalem Day.
The CBS reported that Jerusalem is home to 10.1% of Israel’s total population. The city’s demographic breakdown is as follows: 60.5% of the residents of Jerusalem are Jews (602,200 people) and others, while 39.5% are Arabs (392,900), 29.2% of the city’s population is comprised of Orthodox Jews and Jerusalem’s Jewish population accounts for 7.8% of the country’s total and its Arab population accounts for 18.9% of the nation’s total Arab population.
During the year 2023, the population of Jerusalem increased by approximately 13,400 inhabitants. About 20,000 – 20,500 people were added to the city’s population as a result of child births and another 4,000 people as a result of migration; however, about 11,000 people left the city during the year.
The CBS also reported that 72.9% of Jerusalemites who work are employed in the city and that 60% of Jerusalem residents aged 20 and over have lived in the city since their birth, compared to 33% in the national average.
Jerusalem Day celebrates the liberation of the Old City of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount during the Six Day War on June 7, 1927. It is celebrated in Israel on the corresponding Hebrew date which is the 28th day of the Hebrew month of Iyyar. This year is the 57th anniversary of the war.
