European Commission conducted a survey on quality of Life in European Cities meaning which cities in Europe are the happiest, according to its residents.
More than 40, 000 people were interviewed in 79 cities and in 4 greater cities, allowing comparisons with previous surveys.

The results found that it wasn’t the big cities like London or Paris that were the happiest, but rather the smaller, less busy ones.
Scandinavians in particular appear to be very happy people, which in the past has been put down to their sense of community and high tax rate, which gets spent on improving public facilities.
The happiest place in the UK turned out to be Newcastle upon Tyne, followed closely by Manchester. Take a look at the full list below which Business Insider has broken down some of the data:
1. Aalborg – a small industrial city in the north of Denmark – 72% very satisfied, 24% satisfied.
2. Copenhagen – Denmark’s capital – 67% very satisfied, 28% satisfied.
3. Reykjavik – the capital of Iceland – 66% very satisfied, 31% satisfied.
4. Zurich – Switzerland’s financial centre – 64% very satisfied, 34% satisfied.
5. Graz, Austria – 64% very satisfied, 33% satisfied.
6. Oslo – the capital of Norway – 60% very satisfied, 38% satisfied.
7. Malmo, Sweden – 60% very satisfied, 36% satisfied.
8. Munich, Germany – 57% very satisfied, 38% satisfied.
9. Vienna, Austria – 56% very satisfied, 39% satisfied.
10. Newcastle upon Tyne, UK – 56% very satisfied, 37% satisfied.
11. Belfast, Northern Ireland – 55% very satisfied, 40% satisfied.
12. Rotterdam, Netherlands – 55% very satisfied, 38% satisfied.
13. Cardiff, Wales – 53% very satisfied, 40% satisfied.
14. Groningen, Netherlands – 53% very satisfied, 38% satisfied.
15. Antwerp, Belgium – 52% very satisfied, 45% satisfied.
16. Stockholm, Sweden – 52% very satisfied, 43% satisfied.
17. Amsterdam, Netherlands – 52% very satisfied, 41% satisfied.
18. Manchester, UK – 52% very satisfied, 40% satisfied.
19. Essen, Germany – 51% very satisfied, 42% satisfied.
The overall levels of satisfaction are very high: at least 90% are satisfied in 23 out of 28 EU capitals and there is only one capital city (Athina, 63%) where satisfaction is below 80%. Helsinki and Stockholm record the highest satisfaction scores (both 97%).
