Gen Z has a new dating term and if you have never heard of this one before you should not feel bad about it because very few people over the age of 25 know about this one. It’s called freak matching and it has to do with a woman hooking up with different men. What the older generations see as immoral behavior, the younger ones see as a form of empowerment for women.

Freak matching is a term that has gained popularity on social media platforms like TikTok, referring to the desire to find someone who shares your unique quirks, interests, and “weird” side. It’s about finding someone who not only accepts your eccentricities but also embraces them, creating a connection based on shared oddities and unconventional preferences.

The term freak matching emphasizes the idea that being different is not a flaw but rather a unique quality that can lead to meaningful connections. It encourages people to embrace their individuality and seek out others who appreciate their quirks.

Pop singer Tinashe Jorgensen Kachingwe, known as Tinashe, even has a hit single about freak matching.

“Is somebody gonna match my freak/Is somebody gonna match my freak/Is somebody gonna match my nasty/I got stamina, they say I’m an athlete/Is somebody gonna match my freak?” the song goes

Kelly Elizabeth Wright, assistant professor of language sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, told TODAY.com, “Songs about freaks appear every decade, span every genre of music, and are bops more often than not; being a freak is something we clearly love to sing about.”

“These songs present everything from lighthearted conversations about accepting oneself; to encouragement to flaunt your own freakiness; to powerful confessionals about adversity, ostracism, and exploitation; to support for rebellion and engagement in radical and liberating self-expression; to empowerment for sexually uninhibited women,” Added Wright.

Gen Z-ers – or Zoomers as some people calls them – no longer meet new people in person. They find them on Instagram and other social media services. So, what do they do instead of flirting? They “like” someone’s social media post and expect to be contacted through direct messaging.

Generation Z, often abbreviated as Gen Z, refers to the demographic cohort following Millennials and preceding Generation Alpha. There’s no universally agreed-upon birth year range, but most sources place it somewhere between the mid-to-late 1990s and the early 2010s. This means the oldest members of Gen Z are entering their late 20s, while the youngest are still teenagers.

Unlike Millennials who grew up with the rise of the internet, Gen Z has never known a world without it. They are comfortable with technology and adept at using social media, online communication platforms, and mobile devices.

Gen Z has come of age during a period marked by significant global events like the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Great Recession, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. These events have fostered a sense of social awareness, global citizenship, and a questioning of traditional authority figures.
