Jon Stewart is Returning to the Daily Show – The World Rejoices

Jon Stewart interviews Barack Obama – Wikipedia

Jon Stewart is set to make a triumphant return to “The Daily Show,” the late night cable program on the Comedy Central Network that made him famous. Stewart will once again take over the show’s hosting duties in February and stay on through the 2024 presidential elections.

But he will only host the show one night a week, on Mondays. Jon Stewart’s successor as the Daily Show host, Trevor Noah, stepped down late last year. Since then Comedy Central has not been able to find a new permanent host and has instead relied on revolving guest hosts.

Chris McCarthy, a senior executive at Comedy Central’s parent company Paramount, said in a statement, “Stewart is the voice of our generation, and we are honored to have him return to Comedy Central’s ‘The Daily Show’ to help us all make sense of the insanity and division roiling the country as we enter the election season.”

“In our age of staggering hypocrisy and performative politics,” McCarthy added making a veiled reference to the Donald Trump campaign. “Jon is the perfect person to puncture the empty rhetoric and provide much-needed clarity with his brilliant wit.”

But does the move say more about how Jon Stewart’s career went nowhere after he left The Daily Show in 2015 than it does about how good he really is?

After all, what has Stewart done in the past nine years?

For two years he hosted a political talk show of sorts on Apple called “The Problem with Jon Stewart.” However, the attempt at making a more serious version of Bill Maher’s HBO show “Real Time” went nowhere and was canceled.

The problem for Stewart was that people just weren’t interested in his self-righteous “I’m a better person than you” smugness once the jokes were stripped away. The show was just plain boring and left people wondering if the show was about Jon Stewart dealing with various social issues as in “The Problem – with Jon Stewart,” or if it was what is the Problem with Jon Stewart.

Jon Stewart also wrote and directed a wannabe political satire that was released in 2020, “Irresistible.” Even though the movie had a fine cast led by Steve Carrel, Stewart’s in your face style made the movie practically unwatchable.

So, what can we expect from Jon Stewart’s return?

Probably a lot of him proving how smart he is and not a lot of the funny.
