Sam Altman meets President Isaac Herzog Amos Ben-Gershom (GPO)

King of artificial intelligence Sam Altman, the co-founder of OpenAI which brought the world the controversial ChatGPT service, is currently visiting Israel where he met with the country’s President Isaac Herzog. When speaking with the President and in other places, Altman declared that he firmly believes Israel Startup Nation is a central place for the future development of artificial intelligence technologies.

Sam Altman told President Herzog, “The rate at which the tech and startup community in Israel is embracing AI is incredible to watch.”

“Of course, we do need to balance that,” he added, “with all the risks you just talked about, but I have been very heartened as I have been doing this trip around the world, getting to meet world leaders, in seeing the thoughtfulness, the focus, and the urgency on figuring out how we mitigate these very huge risks that are coming so that we can enjoy benefits of this technology.”

“The energy on making use of the technology and its positive benefits is fantastic to see, and I am sure Israel will play a huge role – its tech community is truly amazing.”

Thursday night he spoke at Tel Aviv University. There Sam Altman made similar comments saying, “The absolute amount of talents, this is a smallish country that punches way above its weight and has lots of talented people that you can get clustered into areas. And then the second is just this sort of relentless drive and vision level of Israeli entrepreneurs. Those two things together I think often lead to incredible prosperity, both in terms of AI research and AI applications.”

Sam Altman’s visit to Israel is being facilitated by the Microsoft Israel development center and will see Altman meet with employees at the Microsoft campus in Herzliya and several prominent Israeli tech entrepreneurs.

Altman, a prominent figure in the world of technology and artificial intelligence, is renowned for his previous role as president of the Y Combinator startup accelerator, a launchpad for many successful tech companies. Under Altman’s leadership, OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research lab, was founded and has since made significant strides in AI.

Sam Altman was born in St. Louis Missouri to a Jewish family in 1985. Altman studied computer science at Stanford, but never completed his B.A. When he was only 19-years-old, Altman co-founded Loopta location-based social networking mobile application, and managed to raise $30 million for the new company at such a young age.

Sam Altman joined Y Combinator, an American technology startup accelerator, and became its president just three years later. Then in 2015, he established YC Continuity, a $700 million equity fund investing in YC companies as they matured.

In March of this year, Sam Altman took part in a $180 million investment in Retro Biosciences, a medtech startup that says it will add 10 years to a healthy human lifespan, starting with cellular reprogramming, autophagy, and plasma-inspired therapeutics.
