Lumen, an Israeli medtech startup that offers a new device that people can use to check their own metabolism, raised $62 million in a Series B funding round led by Pitango Venture Capital. The company has now raised $77 million to date.

Does dieting work? Does exercise work or does it make you so hungry all the time that you end up eating a lot more than the calories that you burn? Does counting calories work, or is it about quality and not quantity? And can the same rule be applied to everyone or does each individual have a different metabolism?

These are all the kinds of questions and problems which confront people as they diet and exercise in an attempt to lose weight. And, of course, an Israeli startup has developed the new Medtech needed to help deal with these dilemmas.
Based in Tel Aviv and founded in 2014 by CEO Daniel Tal Mor and CTO Avi Smila, Lumen has developed the world’s first hand-held, portable device to accurately measure metabolism. The company explains that this kind of tech was once only available to athletes, or in hospitals and clinics. But now it has found a way to offer metabolic testing to everyone.

Lumen is a device and app that measures your metabolism in a single breath and provides daily personalized nutrition based on your metabolic data. Through the device and app, Lumen states that users can achieve their fitness goals whether they be weight loss, performance optimization, or simply improving metabolic health.

“Understanding the impact of nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress on your metabolism is key to reaching your health goals,” said Daniel Tal, CEO, and Co-Founder of Lumen. “One of the things we’re most excited about is enabling people to take care of the ‘engine of the body, which is our metabolism. Over the last year, Lumen customers discovered what types of foods they should be eating and what habits they should change or maintain. It’s been incredible to see the impact Lumen has had on so many people in such a short period of time.”

“Until now, studying metabolism with the standard equipment was challenging for both researchers and participants. The data collection was minimal and would require participants to come to a clinic for each measurement and a practitioner to analyze the results. Now researchers can easily collect multiple data points from participants and build more complex research protocols that unveil new physiological findings,” said Dr. Merav Mor Ph.D, Chief Scientist and Co-Founder at Lumen.
