Is Dan Snyder Dumping the Washington Commanders on Jeff Bezos?

Dan Snyder, the embattled owner of the Washington Commanders NFL team, is now considering selling off the franchise. Some potential suitors for the team include Jeff Bezos and Mr. Beyoncé Knowles – also known as Jay Z.

Mat Ishbia, a successful mortgage banker, is rumored to be another possible contender for the purchase of Dan Snyder’s Washington Commanders. “The NFL is a great league and Washington is one of the elite franchises,” Ishbia told NBC Sports. “I am interested in exploring this opportunity further in the very near future.”

But Jeff Bezos is, by far, the wealthiest potential suitor for the Washington Commanders. The man is said to be worth $114 billion and can afford to fly himself and friends into space just for fun. The NFL would most likely want to see someone with deep pockets own its franchise, rather than someone who would need to leverage a deal for the team’s acquisition by taking on debt. But at the same time, the NFL’s alpha male owners like Jerry Jones and Robert Kraft might not want to see a domineering personality like Jeff Bezos join their private club of NFL owners.

All of the speculation about potential buyers came out after a story leaked that Dan Snyder might want to sell the Washington Commanders. Who leaked? Some think that it was Snyder himself.

One NFL Insider told Yahoo Sports about the idea of a sale of the Washington Commanders, “It might get him past the [December] meetings if he leaked that story. If he thinks there could be a vote [on his ownership of the team], leaking a story about selling could sway some owners to keep their powder dry. The way he maneuvers, who knows what’s real. Maybe it’s true, but I guarantee there are more people in wait-and-see mode than buying that he just changed his mind all the sudden.”

Daniel Snyder has owned the Washington Commanders for 23 years, but it is the recent times that have gotten him into trouble.

Allegations of sexual assault and harassment on the part of people in management positions with the NFL’s Washington Team have been rampant for years. But this is the first time that Daniel Snyder himself has been unmasked as an offender.

At the end of 2020 it was revealed that Daniel Snyder paid $1.6 million in a settlement over sexual misconduct accusations made against him. The money was paid to a former employee of the team formerly known as the Washington Redskins over allegations that Mr. Snyder committed unwanted sexual acts of some form while riding on a private plane with her in 2009.

Forty women came forward that year saying sexual misconduct has been rampant in Washington’s organization during Snyder’s ownership. Allegations include Larry Michael, a former team broadcaster and executive, requesting outtakes from cheerleader video shoots in 2008 and 2010—allegedly at Snyder’s behest.

Daniel Snyder’s official bio on the Washington Commanders’ website is quite flattering, however, calling him a self-made man and an “entrepreneur at heart, Dan Snyder’s life is marked by an enduring passion for the people, the team and the community he loves.”

“Snyder has put his passion into action since purchasing the team in 1999, consistently leading the franchise to new prominence in the community, the business world and the National Football League. Under his leadership, the team has raised millions of dollars for charitable efforts and maintained its place in the top tier of the world’s most valuable sports franchises.”
