Alamo is one of America’s most significant historical landmarks. Founded in 1718 as a mission station, it was erected by the Franciscans in 1744 and was turned into a fort in 1836. Davie Crockett and James Bowie were part of the tiny group who barricaded themselves during the Texas Revolution when they faced an overwhelming Mexican army of about 3,000 men. Despite the overwhelming loss, the cries of “Remember the Alamo!” united the state to finally defeat the Mexicans, even if all 187 defenders were slaughtered.

The repaired houses and the cenotaph honoring the dead Texans can be seen today at this historic site. A rotating collection of weaponry and items relating to the events and history of the mission may be seen at the museum.

It’s worth taking the time to see some of the other missions in the vicinity, all linked by the Missionary Trail and part of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.
