Oscar winner Sean Penn is currently in Ukraine as the country is being attacked on all sides by Russian military forces and has personaly met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Penn happened to be in the country when the fighting broke out as he was there making a new documentary about all of the problems that Ukraine has been having with Russia.

Sean Penn, who is a two time Oscar winner, is no stranger to being in dangerous situations. The 61 year old film star was there in Mexico when American forces tried to capture the infamous drug lord known as el Chapo. Penn was visiting the man for another documentary that he was working on at the time.

Pictures of Sean Penn in protective gear like a bullet proof flak jacket and helmet can be seen everywhere. In this respect he looks like the world renowned journalists who always seem to be at the center of danger, covering wars as they unfold, like Anderson Cooper and Christiane Amanpour. But unlike them, he is not a journalist so Penn can say whatever it is that he really thinks about what is going on.

Newsweek reported that Sean Penn visited the Office of the President of Ukraine and spoke with Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk, as well as local journalists and members of the Ukrainian military.” The Office of the President issued a statement praising the Oscar-winning actor and filmmaker, noting that the director had come to Kyiv to record events that were unfolding in Ukraine “and to tell the world the truth about Russia’s invasion of our country.”

On twitter Sean Penn released an extended statement Saturday night saying, “Already a brutal mistake of lives taken and hearts broken, and if he doesn’t relent, I believe Mr. Putin will have made a most horrible mistake for all of humankind. President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people have risen as historic symbols of courage and principle.”

“Ukraine is the tip of the spear for the democratic embrace of dreams. If we allow it to fight alone, our soul as America is lost,” he added.
