AlgaHealth is an Israeli biotech startup pioneering the development of smart, cost-effective applications of microalgae. AlgaMealth makes natural ingredients, including foxoxentin, that help prevent cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity.
AlgaHealth was founded in 2017 and is led by CEO Hagay Tzur and CTO Dr. Oran Ayalon. Tzur has over 30 years’ of experience in the microalgae industry and served as the CEO of Algatechnologies. Ayalon has over 20 years’ of experience in R&D in the biotech industry and extensive experience with microalgae. Ayalon holds a PhD in biology/chemistry from the Weizmann Institute of Science and a post-doctorate from Yale University.
In recent years Israel has seen multi-billion dollar exits for numerous software and security companies. But Startup Nations is also known for its medtech startups as the country has always been a center for medical research and innovation.

Microalgae, also called microphytes, are microscopic algae invisible to the naked eye. They are phytoplankton found mostly in freshwater and marine systems, living in both the water column and sediment. Their sizes can range from a few micrometers to a few hundred micrometers. Unlike higher plants, microalgae do not have roots, stems, or leaves.
According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, Nutraceuticals are products, which other than nutrition are also used as medicine. A nutraceutical product may be defined as a substance, which has physiological benefit or provides protection against chronic disease. Nutraceuticals may be used to improve health, delay the aging process, prevent chronic diseases, increase life expectancy, or support the structure or function of the body.
Recently, nutraceuticals have been of great interest to medical researchers because of their potential nutritional, safety and therapeutic effects. Recent studies have shown promising results for these compounds in various complications. In the present review much effort has been devoted to present new concepts about nutraceuticals based on their diseases modifying indications.
Emphasis has been made to present herbal nutraceuticals effective on hard curative disorders related to oxidative stress including allergy, Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular, cancer, diabetes, eye, immune, inflammatory and Parkinson’s diseases as well as obesity.
So, what does AlgaHealth do?
Well, AlgaHealth has developed novel proprietary microalgae strains and innovative patent-protected solutions for stable and sustainable manufacture of Fucoxanthin – a high-value multifunctional nutraceutical that has numerous health benefits for treatment and prevention of metabolic syndromes and other chronic medical afflictions
The company explains that the world of microalgae is vast, with hundreds of species being used today for anything from medication and nutrition to natural raw materials to biofuels and thousands of species that are still waiting to be discovered.
Its research and development are based on deep knowledge, technology, and methodologies. They can be leveraged to produce additional ingredients from the same algae strains or be used to address new markets with products from new microalgae species.
