Benjamin de Rothschild – Banking Icon – Died at 57

The Rothschild family member suffered a heart attack.

Benjamin de Rothschild, head of the Edmond de Rothschild Group, has died of a heart attack. He was 57 years old.

Forbes magazine estimated his net worth at $1.5 billion. Benjamin de Rothschild descended from James de Rothschild who founded the French branch of the Rothschild family.

The Rothschild family is a wealthy Jewish family originally from Frankfurt, Germany. The Rothschild family possessed the largest private fortune in the world throughout the 19th century. But for world Jewry and Israelis especially the family is best known for its philanthropy, support of Jewish causes and Zionism. The Rothschild’s gave millions to early Zionist projects in Israel.

Streets throughout Israel are named for Jacob de Rothschild who financed the first Zionist settlement in Israel, Rishon-LeZion. He also purchased a great deal of the land which now comprises modern day Israel from Ottoman landlords.

During the 1870s the family contributed nearly 500,000 francs per year on behalf of Eastern Jewry to the Alliance Israélite Universelle.

Walter Rothschild, 2nd Baron Rothschild, was the addressee of the Balfour Declaration to the Zionist Federation. This was the formal statement by the British government made in 1917 in support of establishing a Jewish state.

Born on 30 July 1963, Benjamin de Rothschild was the son of Edmond and Nadine de Rothschild. He led f the group created by his father since 1997.

A statement released by the Edmond de Rothschild Group described Benjamin de Rothschild as a “visionary entrepreneur, passionate about finance, speed, sailing and automobiles, wine enthusiast, Benjamin de Rothschild was also an active philanthropist, namely involved in developing innovation within the Adolphe de Rothschild Foundation Hospital. With his unique character, Benjamin de Rothschild never ceased to transform and modernize his legacy, in line with the family’s values.”

An avid sailor, Benjamin de Rothschild bought the 62-foot long Elf Aquitaine in 2000 and founded the professional sailing team the Gitana Team. He also owned the Rothschild wineries.

He is survived by his wife Ariane de Rothschild, 55, and four daughters.
