Donald Trump just got passes from two rabbis, Rabbi Hazzan Jeffrey Myers of Pittsburgh and Rabbi Shmuley Boteach of New Jersey, the latter was on Fox News. I believe that they still have a chance to denounce Donald Trump and his entourage. Do they have the will to do it?
Trump didn’t kill anyone and will not be arrested. He did not direct or order people and will not be arrested as we learn more about the bombs sent and the Pittsburgh Massacre. But he has incited. Rabbi Shmuley Boteach diverted attention from this in his interview on Fox by factually reminding us about the incitement by leaders of Iran against Jews.
Rabbis and the people (more than 26,000 signed a petition in Pittsburgh) are asking for Trump to denounce White Nationalists in our nation. Fine, but Abraham Lincoln spoke out about slavery (things were worse then) and Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which freed the slaves in the territory that he had no control over (choosing not to free the slaves in the territory that he controlled). We need much more!
So we have incitement by Trump and by Iran. Rabbi Boteach condemned both Obama and Joe Biden in his comments.
These men surely have not spoken out the way that Trump has spoken. Where has it gotten us with Iran and its cast of supporting nations? Are we in a better place?
Rabbi Boteach came prepared with the same old material and those minutes were not the best that could have been offered to the viewers. Obama, Biden, and Trump have no control over Iran, but the two deplorable acts have taken place under Trump and we as a nation can and must take control. Boteach and Trump have failed us.
Rabbi Boteach mentioned that education is important. True, but a replay of the Fox News video does not reveal the kind of educational action that I proposed in Jewish Business News, action that could be taken by the powerful Christian community to help overcome anti-Semitism.
Should we politicize what has happened? Of course, we should. Where is Trump’s plan of action? Maybe something will arrive in his Tweet?
Our nation’s families are divided. About 25 percent of Jewish voters are not expected to vote Democratic. That is understandable, but there is a major crisis right now that has defined our existence throughout the centuries. Nobody is going to tell me that Trump didn’t do anything wrong. Nobody!
The voices of the opposition in Pittsburgh are telling Boteach and Trump that what Trump has done for Israel is irrelevant at this moment and citing Jewish children and grand-children does not make up for a deficiency in human values that even Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn believed in. Trump has been awful from the beginning, telling Fox News that his Christian value is “an eye for an eye.”
A march on Washington may be needed. When was the last time that Jews called for that?
