Humpback whales in the Hudson River made some surprise appearances along Manhattan’s West Side. The Coast Guard believe that one or more humpbacks are to be in the harbor with one in particular frequenting the waters of the Hudson River near Liberty Island and traveling north.
Several boats reported spotting the whale last week in New York Harbor. Then again just after 2 p.m. Sunday, breaching off between 48th and 60th streets, and again off 96th Street.
Authorities urging sailors and mariners to watch out for the large mammal, and to exercise caution by slowing down to a safe speed and keeping a sharp lookout in the area.
Experts say whales are migrating south because of the food supply.
Cleaner waters and an abundance of fish have attracted at least one humpback whale to the river waters off Manhattan this month.
