Katie Couric turned down a big amount, $1 million to be precise, from her salary,  in order to avoid layoffs of some of her co-workers, when she was anchoring “CBS Evening News”,  Page Six reports.

According to the new book by agent Alan Berger, Powerhouse: The Untold Story of Hollywood’s Creative Artists Agency,  Katie Couric was in her third year at CBS, when the network was facing some difficulties and had plans to cut budgets and make significant staff layoffs.

The book states that Katie Couric met with CBS News President Sean McManus and agreed to cut her own $15 million a year by $1 million. She laid down three conditions, Berger says in the book — “the money would be directly used to pay for her staff so that they would not be terminated, ” and that “this would be done quietly and with no public or private acknowledgment or announcement about her gesture.”

Couric was at CBS from 2006 to 2011.
