Emma Watson Gets Challenged to Spend a Week in a French Migrant Camp

‘Watson should spend a week’s holiday in a Calais migrant camp, without guards’

Emma Watson 2

A petition is calling on Emma Watson to spend a week living in a migrant camp.

The Change.org petition asks Watson, who played Hermoine in the “Harry Potter” franchise, to spend seven days at a camp in Calais, France:

In order to show how safe current migration is to Europe, particularly regarding the cause of feminism (I reject wholeheartedly the notion that North African and Middle Eastern migrants are unsafe, and rapists), Emma Watson should spend a week’s holiday in a Calais migrant camp, without guards of course, to show how safe, and how pro feminism these migrants are.

The petition, started by Oscar Izard, is now at 15, 258 signatures, with a goal of 25, 000 signatures. A few days ago, it stood at around 6, 500 signatures.

Watson hasn’t addressed the petition publicly.

In Europe, refugees and the safety of women has been a strongly divisive issue after German women were assaulted on New Year’s Eve by 1, 000 men. The Mayor of Cologne, where the assaults took place, proposed that women adopt a “code of conduct” to avoid future assaults.

A few days ago, German media outlet Deutsche Welle‎ reported there were more attacks on New Year’s Eve in 12 German states.

In September, Watson posted #refugeeswelcome, and it was retweeted by tens of thousands of people.

The petition, however, seems to be hitting out at Watson’s gender equality activism.

This week, Watson is in Davos, Switzerland, at the World Economic Forum annual conference to support the “HeForShe Impact Champions” campaign. She’s discussing a report on gender equality. On Friday, ten of the world’s leading companies at Davos released new workforce gender diversity figures, The Independent reported.
