There are 50 active astronauts in NASA program and it is hoping to create an astronaut corps as it readies to send humans to the International Space Station in 2017. NASA is also testing a Space Launch System to take astronauts into deep space aboard the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle.

Applicants need a bachelor’s degree in engineering, biological or physical science or mathematics with at least three years of professional experience related to that degree or at least 1, 000 hours of pilot time in a jet aircraft. You’ll also have to meet the physical requirements related to eye sight, blood pressure (no higher than 140/90 while seated) and be between 5 feet 2 inches and 6.25 inches tall.
There are no age restrictions for the program. Astronaut candidates selected in the past have ranged between the ages of 26 and 46, with the average age being 34.
After the first round in the astronaut search, then there will be a week-long process of personal interviews, medical screenings and orientation with the pool being narrowed down until the final astronaut class is announced in June 2017.
