A group of hunters recently came across an unexpected scene – an enormous split in the land that’s been referred to as a miniature Grand Canyon, in the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming.

SNS Outfitter & Guides initially reported the anomaly Friday, Oct. 23, on the company’s Facebook page, saying that the cut, “appeared in the last two weeks on a ranch we hunt in the Bighorn Mountains.”

With no seismic activity recorded in the area, what caused the chasm is a mystery.

Wyoming Geological Survey says the the crack is likely the result of a slow-moving landslide, the Powell Tribune reported.

“There is some speculation on the web, and with our folks too, that an early, wet, spring and summer had a lot to do with it, ” added the Survey’s public information specialist Chamois Andersen. “It is not uncommon to have slides like that.”

While hunting this past weekend in the Bighorns, we came across an awesome example of how our earth is not as stable as you might think. Awesome forces at work here to move this much dirt!!
