When critics wondered why he would back him as the “greatest, ” Murdoch replied:

“Agree much about Bloomberg, nannystate, etc, but still a great philanthropic executive who, with Guiliani [sic], made NY the greatest.”

A couple of hours later, he followed up again with: “I did not say I would vote for him! Just a friend I admire.”

Former Chicago Tribune editor James Warren pricked, “It’s that Murdoch populist streak and his love of riches-to-mega-riches stories as warmly manifested by the former mayor. We do think Bloomberg should run, if only to assure that the National Rifle Association goes broke trying to trash him.”
