According to annual Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) for 2015, released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem is Israel’s leading academic institution,  ranked 67, up from 70 last year. The Technion, Israel Institute of Technology is ranked 77, up from 78. Technion broke through to the top 80 in 2012, and has remained in this elite group since.

The Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot remains in the 101-150 ranking slot since no individual places are given after 100. Tel Aviv University is ranked 151-200. Bar-Ilan University and Ben Gurion University of the Negev are ranked between 400 and 500.

World’s top universities are leading American institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of California, Berkeley.

Back in Israel, universities are also ranked according to specific disciplines:

  • In the field of computer science the Technion ranks 18 for the third consecutive year. Tel Aviv University 20. The Technion is one of only four non-U.S. universities among the world’s top 20 in computer science.
  • In Mathematics the Hebrew University is ranked 33.
  • In engineering/technology, Technion is ranked 44, and is the only Israeli university to place in the top 50.
  • In Chemistry the Weizmann Institute is ranked 47 and in Economics the Hebrew University is ranked 51-75.

The Shanghai Ranking was established in 2003 with the aim to identity the global standing of top Chinese universities while comparing them to 500 of the world’s leading institutes. Since then it has evolved into the most influential ranking of universities worldwide. Many objective indicators are examined, including the number of faculty and alumni who have won Nobel Prizes and other prestigious awards; the number of articles published in leading scientific journals; and other per capita performance indices of the universities. More than 1000 universities are ranked by ARWU every year and the top 500 are including in the published rankings.
