John Kerry, US secretary of state, in hospital after bicycle crash in Switzerland

The US Secretary of State John Kerry is in Switzerland for talks on the Iranian nuclear programme, and on Monday was due in Madrid for the signing of a defence deal.

The US Secretary of State John Kerry,   71, had a biking accident in the nearby French Alps. He did not lose consciousness, said his spokesman John Kirby.

The injury is near the site of a previous hip surgery. Kerry will return to Boston on Sunday for treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital with his doctor who did the prior surgery, the spokesman said in a statement.

Kerry was in Switzerland for talks on the Iranian nuclear programme, and was due in Madrid on Monday for the signing of a defence deal.

Kerry regrets that he won’t be able to visit Spain as planned, and he also won’t be able to attend the Paris counter-ISIL coalition ministerial meeting on Tuesday. He will participate in the Paris meeting remotely, Kirby said.

Mr Kerry is known for his love of cycling and is often takes his bike with him when he travels.
