Rep. Jerry Nadler

U.S. Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-10) on Thursday announced an agreement between the Federal Government and the Trust for Governors Island that provides $11, 970, 504 for repairs to buildings damaged by Superstorm Sandy.

The Federal Government will provide 90% of the funding for the project which will allow electrical and other equipment to be placed on elevated platforms to decrease vulnerability to future flooding damage. The funding will be provided through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Public Assistance Program.

“In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, Governors Island was severely damaged and crucial repairs are still needed so that this vital public institution can become fully operational once again. The Trust maintains the parks, trails and other recreational spaces that provide New Yorkers with a temporary escape from hectic city life, ” said Rep. Nadler.

“This federal funding will ensure the Trust has sufficient facilities to keep Governors Island running smoothly for all that visit during the upcoming spring and summer tourist season. Additionally, I would like to thank Mayor de Blasio for his assistance in securing these important funds, ” Nadler added.

“On behalf of The Trust for Governors Island, I would like to thank Congressman Jerry Nadler, the entire NYC Congressional delegation, the Mayor’s office and the NYC Office of Management and Budget for their support to secure this FEMA allocation, ” said Leslie Koch, president of The Trust for Governors Island. “The funds allocated today will make possible the restoration of critical infrastructure that is so important to the Island and its development.”
