Livni Gives Up PM Rotation Deal with Herzog to Insure Netanyahu’s Ousting

A little over 12 hours before the vote is due to start in Israel, MK Tzipi Livni, co-leader of the Zionist camp, has announced that she will waive the rotation deal with Yitzhak Herzog if it proves to be an obstacle to the effort to replace Benjamin Netanyahu.

The foundation of the new Zionist Camp Knesset list, forged after PM Netanyahu had dissolved his coalition government on Dec 2, 2014, was a union between the Labor party and Tzipi Livni’s Movement party. The condition for that partnership has been, from its inception, the deal by which Herzog would serve the first two years of the 4-year term, should the list win, to be followed by two years with Livni at the helm.

But, despite her proven value as a vote getting asset, boosting Labor’s numbers from 18 to as much as 26 in the most recent polls, many voters felt that her somewhat combative and assertive demeanor during the campaign were a detriment rather than an asset, and that she lacked the temperament for the top job.

In an interview he gave Monday evening, before Livni’s announcement, Zionist camp chairman Itzhak Herzog said that Livni would get the top job in his government.

Herzog stressed that he would honor their contract, as he honors any agreement, but added, “We are realistic people, and we will act in the best interest of the state.”

Herzog also said that did not rule out the Likud as a partner in his government.
