Back in November, Delek Drilling, one of Tamar’s owners, made the offer to sell gas to Egypt starting in 2017.

Imports from Israel are a sensitive issue, because of the general disdain Egyptians feel toward the Jewish State, even after decades of peace between the two countries. But Egypt’s oil minister has already said last month that his government would welcome Israeli imports.

The oil ministry source told Reuters “negotiations are under way about the amount of gas that can be imported.”

Another source at Cairo’s airport earlier in the day said that a delegation came for several hours from Israel to discuss gas shipments.

As recently as three years ago, it was Egypt which exported natural gas to Israel, under a deal that was interrupted by Islamist president Morsi. Now Egypt is experiencing its worst energy crisis in decades.

Karma’s a bitch.
