Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel Likely to Coast into Re-Election

Rahm Emanuel

Rahm Emanuel faces various contenders in the mayoral race, but with a 50% approval rating and a $14 million war chest, some believe that he is going to just coast through the election. Greg Hinz of Crains’ Chicago Business is not so pleased with this, although he gives Emanuel a B plus rating. He calls the election a “crashing bore” and wrote, “Chicago seems to be following the American election norm, in which incumbents usually just have to show up to win again. The city, its prospects and its residents are poorer for it, ” Hinz writes.

The race seemed interesting when Karen Lewis, Chicago Teacher’s Union President, expressed her intention to run, but health problems caused her to exit the race. Hinz said this is a shame, because Lewis “has the unique ability to get the mayor’s goat, ” and education is a major issue, along with mass transit, economic development and crime.

Emanuel ruffled some feathers when he suggested using park lands to build Obama’s Presidential Library, in a desperation bid to ensure the site is in Chicago. Rahm Emanuel is also receiving scathing attacks on his social media page, and Chicago icon, former Bears coach Mike Ditka has openly supported Democratic rival alderman Bob Fioretti, even though Ditka is a conservative. Still, Hinz think Emanual is on “easy street” and that is just boring.
