President of the CW network Mark Pedowitz discussed its future at the Television Critics Association winter previews which were held on Sunday. This while the broadcast network has already announced the renewal of 8 of its current shows for another season.
The CW programs that will return next fall include Arrow for a fourth season, Jane the Virgin for a second one, Reign for a third year, Supernatural for its eleventh season, The 100 for a third year, The Flash for season 2, The Originals for season 3 and The Vampire Diaries for a seventh year. As you can see, the CW is heavy on sci-fi and comic book based TV shows.

Pedowitz said of the programs, “Each of these series have helped define what The CW is today, a network that is home to smart, provocative, quality programming, targeting a savvy adult audience. By picking up these shows now, our executive producers can start planning next season’s storylines, and rolling these shows out throughout next season guarantees The CW will have more proven original series for our fall, midseason and summer 2016 line-ups.”
While it has been the Marvel Comics Universe which has ruled at the box office for more than a decade with Iron Man, Spider Man, The X Men and The Avengers all being made into successful movie franchises, DC Comics has been sticking largely to the small screen. The CW has had Smallville and currently has Arrow and Flash.
On that subject Pedowitz said that the CW is planning on expanding the Flash and Aroow universe. There is certainly no lack of superheroes for shows and DC is owned by Warner Brothers, the “W” of the CW. Yet rival network Fox got the rights for the new show Gotham about the years before the rise of Batman.
