David Cross’ New Film ‘Hits’ to Be Released By Bit Torrent

David Cross has reached a deal to have his directorial debut “Hits” released by Bit Torrent. This will be the first time that the web site is releasing an original movie. The movie will be released on February 15th.

Bit Torrent is usually associated with illegal downloads and uploads of pirated copyrighted material such as movies and television shows. But it is actually used sometimes for the completely legal distribution of materials. For example, new musicians and writers use it to disseminate their works.

Cross, who was raised Jewish but now calls himself an atheist, is most famous for his roles on Arrested development and Mr. Show. He has more than 100 acting appearances under his belt including numerous animated movies and television shows. The film, also written by Cross, deals with how people today can become famous for nothing just by getting on YouTube.

It premiered last year at The Sundance Film festival and the critics have not been very kind.

Variety said, “Missing its comedic targets more often than not, writer-director David Cross’s scattershot “Hits” resembles early Alexander Payne in its playful (or hateful?) skewering of local yokels and their purportedly dim dreams. Some will see smug misanthropy in the low-budget pic’s broad swipe at small-town activist and celebrity wannabes given false hope by vaguely viral YouTube vids, but Cross’ slight affection for an upstate New York municipal worker and his would-be American idol daughter shines through — arguably. In the end, though, the effort of sussing out this satire’s attitude seems silly for the fact that its jokes just aren’t funny enough.”
