Former “Little House on the Prairie” star, Melissa Gilbert, has said goodbye to her breast implants. She described her feelings about the decision in her blog post: Tale of Two Titties: “First, I am concerned about my health. Second, I don’t like the way they look or feel, Frankly, I’d like to take a Zumba class without fear I’ll end up with two black eyes.”
What prompted her to get the implants were personal and professional reasons. After breastfeeding her child, Gilbert’s now ex-husband Bruce Boxleitner, said her breast were like “socks full of marbles with knots at the top.” In addition, the pressures of looking perfect while on Dancing With the Stars created a body image obsession. Gilbert writes, “It was all about spray tan and glitter and glamor and what other people think and being way too skinny…way too skinny! Yuck. I stayed in that headspace for many years after that.”

Melissa Gilbert was raised Jewish by her adoptive parents, and started out in showbiz with commercials before her big break, Little House on the Prairie. Even the wholesome show Little House on the Prairie gave Gilbert a complex about her looks, as the sides of her nose were shaded to make it look more narrow, causing her to have cosmetic surgery. She was made to wear a padded bra on Little House and in the TV remake of Splendor in the Grass, she had to wear full corset, a padded bra and had cleavage painted on her.
Another reason Gilbert had the breast implants removed was that they have to be replaced every 10 years or so, and said she couldn’t imagine being an 80 year old going for a breast implant. Gilbert, aged 50, wrote “Aging is a gift, not a curse. Love yourself. You are perfectly beautiful. You are enough.”
