Eight shoes that once were worn to prisoners at the Nazi death camp in Majdanek, Poland were apparently stolen, as reported by the Jerusalem Post. A spokeswoman for the museum on the site of the death camp said that a worker noticed a hole in the mesh that displayed several hundred shoes and, after counting them, found that eight were missing.
In August 2010, a fire that started in the barracks destroyed 100, 000 pairs of shoes that were worn by inmates. Around 360, 000 people, half of them Jews, perished at Majdanek. Last month the iron sign in front of the Dachau concentration camp that read “Arbeit Mach Frei” was stolen.
