Dave Chappelle ‘Apologizes’ to Donald Sterling

Celebrities At NBA All Star Game

The most unlikely of people has come out in support of former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling. Controversial comic Dave Chappelle said that Sterling should have been allowed to keep his team.

Well it’s official. Donald Sterling is forgiven for being a racist and he did not even need to make a pilgrimage to either Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton to do so.

When one of the most cutting edge Black comics of his time who is known best for his satirizing race relations in modern America says that you got a raw deal then it must be true.

In an interview with GQ ahead of the comic’s comeback tour Chappelle said, “Ultimately, I don’t think he should have lost his team. I don’t like the idea that someone could record a secret conversation and that a person could lose their assets from that, even though I think what he said was awful. When you think about the intimacy of a situation, like, can a man just chill with his mistress in peace?* I just don’t like when things like that happen, because if they take s–t away for things that people say that are objectionable, I may not have anything in a few years. Granted, I don’t think I say s–t like “Stop bringing white people to my game.”

Chappelle went on to apologize for having been too harsh on Sterling in his jokes about the man.

In a show at Radio City Hall last June Chappelle joked about how un-surprising it was to discover that a white American man in his 80s was a racist. He then did an impression of Sterling from the recordings of his conversation and of the man trying to apologize to his black players. Chappelle also said Sterling must have been racists for saying not to bring that Black man – Magic Johnson – to his games as opposed to saying, “that HIV positive man.”
