Breaking up tends to be difficult, even more so if you’re super wealthy. 2014 saw the most expensive divorce in history when Dmitry Rybolovlev and Elena Rybolovleva parted ways in May. The scale of the divorce settlement between the Russian-born Monégasque businessman and his wife? An astonishing $4.5 billion!

What about other expensive divorces down through the years? The Jewish French billionaire Alec Wildenstein and Jocelyn Perisse’s divorce in 1999 came in at about $2.5 billion, placing it second on the list. Alec Wildenstein died in 2008. He was an art dealer, racehorse owner, and breeder.

Rupert Murdoch and Wendi Deng divorced in 2013 with a mammoth $1.8 billion settlement – the third costliest divorce in history. Interestingly, Murdoch was also involved in the fifth costliest divorce back in 1999 when Anna Maria Torv received a settlement of $1.2 billion.
