Could Non-Citizens Affect the November Elections Outcome?

voting

Could the outcome of elections in November be affected by non-citizens voting? Some would say such a scenario is dreamed up by paranoid, gun-toting, border-staring right wingers, while those on the right think the left is in Cloud Cuckoo land or worse, aiding and abetting non-citizen votes with their opposition to requiring voters to provide certain forms of ID.

Jesse Richman and David Earnest, political scientists at Old Dominion University, wrote in the Wall Street Journal that the truth might be somewhere in between. There aren’t illegals voting in droves, but there are certainly more than zero. According to a Cooperative Congressional Election Study, most non-citizens do not vote and do not register to vote, but in the samples between 2008 and 2010, around 14% were registered to vote. It was found that 6.4% actually voted. This could tip the balance for Democrats, because it was found that 80% of the non-citizens who voted chose Democratic candidates.

This might not seem like an overwhelming amount, but it is certainly enough to tip the scale in some very close races. However, this issue does not touch on voted I.D. Whether it was because they slipped through the cracks, had fake ID or another scenario, all of those registered said they provided I.D. before voting. If tighter voter ID isn’t the cause of non-citizens voting, perhaps it’s back to the drawing board.
