Joan Rivers’ Family May Take Legal Action over Botched Surgery

JoanRivers Getty

Joan Rivers is currently in a medically-induced coma following a cardiac arrest resulting from surgery on her vocal chords. While the surgery was taking place, the legendary comedian stopped breathing and had to be transported to a clinic for emergency care. Her condition was critical at first, has been upgraded to stable, but if brought out of the coma, some doctors say she will either need to be wheelchair-bound the rest of her life and may possibly have impaired thought and speech.

The 81 year old Rivers is currently on life support. Her daughter, 46 year old Melissa, is by her bedside day and night, and while her comments to the media have been hopeful, many close to the family are concerned that Melissa is “in denial” about her mother’s condition. While there is risk with all surgeries, there is talk that Rivers’ family may consider legal action against the clinic where the procedure was performed. Doubtless, if there is a case, the lawyers on behalf of the clinic may argue that it was the 81 year old celebrity’s age that may have been a factor, but she did seem vivacious prior to the procedure.
