Brainsway Helmet Monitors Brain Patterns of Depression Patients

Looking like something out of an episode of Star Trek, a new helmet designed by the Israeli company Brainsway can monitor the brain patterns of people suffering from severe depression. It can help to determine the level of depression that a patient is suffering from, what sort of treatment he needs while also offering valuable information that can help towards finding an eventual cure for this crippling disease.

Everyone has been talking about depression since the comedian and Oscar winning actor Robin Williams committed suicide last week. “How can someone so rich and famous and funny get depressed, ” they ask. Television commentators have mused about the connection between comedic talent and depression to no end.

It seems that depression is still an illness that few understand and that continues to bear a social stigma.

Establisehd in 2003, Brainsway states that it is is dedicated to developing and providing advanced technology solutions for the treatment of a variety of brain disorders. The company’s flagship technology is the dTMS (Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) which it says launches a new era in brain disorder treatment.

Its technology has been approved by the FDA for treating depressive episodes in adult patients suffering from Major Depressive Disorder, who failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from previous anti-depressant medication and it holds an exclusive license from the NIH for its patented dTMS technology.

It became a publicly traded company on the Tel-Aviv Stock Exchange in January 2007.

The company’s technology has already been applied with thousands of patients around the world in the framework of clinical studies. It held over 60 clinical trials held across the globe.

In other Brainswat news, it is set to receive the Entrepreneurship Award at Jthe BNF (Jerusalem Business Networking Forum) Conference in Jerusalem, which began last Thursday. Brainsway is one of five companies selected by a special committee to receive the award. It will be presented by Ofer Berkovitch, Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem. Brainsway will be featured in a presentation as one of JBNF’s selection of Jerusalem’s Five Hottest Start-ups for 2014.

The JBNF conference states that it gathers under one roof all the resources that small business and hi-tech start-ups need in order to grow and to thrive.

Last month it received Brazilian ANVISA approval for treating six brain disorders, depression, bipolar disorder (manic depression), schizophrenia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Parkinson’s disease and chronic pain.
