435 East 52nd St -Movie Director Doug Liman Reminisces About His Dad Arthur Liman While His Mother Ellen Lists New York Coop For $14.5 Million

Doug Liman describes a privileged upbringing, complete with upper east side private schools. While his dad was a highly successful lawyer he was careful to instill serious values into his children. Despite representing high profile clients, often in cases with exceptional public interest, he nevertheless always came home Friday nights, and Friday night dinner was sacred. Arthur Liman died in 1997 at the relatively young age of 65.

Doug Liman still goes to the same synagogue and sits in the same seats where the family sat, including on his father’s yartzeit. For a hot Hollywood director, Liman says this gives him time to reflect and to stay grounded. Jewish tradition has given to him, as indeed it does to all who are open to it, whether religious or not, a well grounded, solid, perspective on life and the ephemeral nature of both its pleasures and its tribulations.

By coincidence while the Forward was writing about Doug Liman, this week too the New York Observer is highlighting his father’s former penthouse apartment, which has just been listed of sale for US$14.5 million.

Located on the East side at 435 East 52nd St. the building is a very exclusive cooperative known as the River House, overlooking the East River. It is currently still owned by Arthur Liman’s widow Ellen Liman, née Ellen Fogelson, who is a writer and an artist. The home is a perfect environment for bringing up a family, and the Limans had three children together, including film director Doug Liman, his sister Emily, a neurobiologist, and his brother Lewis Liman who also became a lawyer like his dad.

These days though, it seems, Ellen lives mostly in Palm Beach in the winter, and in Rye and Martha’s Vineyard during the balmy summer months.

Accordingly the 4, 100 square foot penthouse, with its splendid river views, including of the Queensboro Bridge, has been put up for sale for the cool sum of US$14.5 million. The apartment has three levels, including a third floor covered in terraces.

Photographs show a very stately home indeed, though perhaps today just a little staid, except for the kitchen which looks very up to date. With a little careful decoration, for a few dollars, it can soon all be restored to like new however, ready for a new family that is making its mark on the city and the nation.
