This will be new acting ground for Duchovny. Sam Hodiak will be nothing like Californication’s Hank Moody, an incorrigible womanizer and drug abuser.
After seven seasons and 80 episodes, the cable movie channel Showtime’s raunchy drama which Duchovny starred in, Californication, will be coming to an end in a few weeks. The “dramedy” is known for its profanity, sexual content and explicit sex scenes.
Since 2007, when the show premiered, Duchovny has played the somewhat self-loathing writer and novelist Hank Moody, the show’s central character. Moody is a stark contrast to Duchovny’s most famous character, Fox Mulder, whom he portrayed on the 1990s science fiction show The X Files.
Californication has given Hank Moody a number of relationships over the years, including one with an underage girl. The character somewhat parallels Duchovny’s own life as he once sought treatment for a sex addiction.
Moody has had an on again off again relationship with his daughter’s mother, Karen, played by Natasha McElhone. Overall, Moody has been the kind of protagonist who makes it hard for you to root for.
Californication has also featured notable character actors Evan Handler (Sex in the City, The west Wing) and Pamela Adlon (Louie).
David Duchovy, 53, has appeared or stared in more than sixty different movies and television shows. He has also tried writing and directing.
Born in New York City, the actor graduated with a B.A. in English literature in 1982 from the Ivy League Princeton University in New Jersey. He also earned an M.A. in English literature from another Ivy League school, Yale.
Duchovny’s first major movie appearance was a small part in 1988’s Working Girl. He catapulted to stardom in 1993 with the success of the television show The X Files.
While technically still married to the actress Tea Leone, the couple have been separated for several years. They have two children together.
Californication airs Sunday nights in America. It has four episodes left and its finale should air at the end of June. Aquarius does not yet have a premiere date and may not air until early 2015.
