The State Prosecutor is asking for 5-7 years in jail and a fine of NIS 1.2 million ($ 342 million) for former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, following his conviction for bribery in the Holyland case. The request was made in the sentencing hearings before Tel Aviv District Court Judge David Rosen today.
“The punishment in the Holyland case should be heard far and wide, be proportionate to the severity of the acts, and deter others, because the picture that emerged in the case is rare in its severity and in its effect on the State of Israel, ” said prosecutor Yehonatan Tadmor. “It is rare in the scale of the corruption, the amount of the bribery, the identity of the individuals who made the bribes and were bribed, and in the huge scale of the projects involved.”
The prosecution is also asking nine years in jail for the Holyland project’s developer Hillel Cherney, who was convicted of giving millions of shekels in bribes and of money laundering; at least eight years in jail for developer Avigdor Kelner; at least seven years in jail for mediator Meir Rabin; six years in jail for former Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupoliansky, who was convicted on receiving NIS 2 million in bribes. However, the prosecution said that it was prepared to take under advisement the fact that Lupoliansky channeled the bribe money to the NPO Yad Sarah, which he founded.
