As widely expected, South African international hotelier Sol Kerzner has now announced the finalization of an agreement with Malaysian company Mulpha, to take on the management of private island resort Hayman Island.
Hayman is one of Australia’s most famous and secluded luxury resorts, the northernmost of the Whitsunday Islands beside the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland. The island covers 726 acres and is named in honour of Thomas Hayman, the nineteenth century navigator who finally charted the island’s waters which had first been visited by Captain Cook in the eighteenth century. The island been an oasis for guests since the 1950s.

Under the deal announced today with Kerzner’s international hotel group, Kerzner International, the iconic island resort will first undergo a multi-million dollar renovation to be re-launched as “One&Only Hayman Island”, in April 2014.
One&Only is Kerzner International’s luxury resort brand, with locations in the Bahamas, Mexico, Mauritius, the Maldives, South Africa and Dubai. One&Only properties are considered to be among the finest luxury resort properties anywhere.

Mulpha will continue to own the property and also to develop its private residences there, with a staged roll-out of ultra-luxury Hayman private residences and Hayman marina residences offered for sale to select clients and guests who love the island. Mulpha’s Executive Chairman Seng Huang Lee described the partnership as the start of a new era for the resort.
DBI Design, in partnership with the Kerzner International Development Team, has been engaged for the interior design and landscape architecture for the resort’s rebirth.
The key pool wing, which is the centerpiece of the resort, will be redeveloped and feature new all-suite living spaces offering either one or two bedrooms. New rooms and suites will feature ocean and lagoon views and have re-imagined interiors and amenities. The exclusive beach villas, with secluded second bedroom retreat rooms, as well as the one, two and three-bedroom penthouses, will continue to offer the ultimate in exclusivity, privacy, personalized service and experience fitting for such a resort.
As with all One&Only properties, One&Only Hayman Island will cater to couples and families alike – preserving privacy and serenity for those who seek it whilst also providing engaging activities for all ages.
Guests will be able to enjoy a host of unique sporting facilities to discover the island and the Great Barrier Reef – one of the most complex natural ecosystems in the world with over 33, 000 species found off the coastline.
The resorts guests will have the opportunity to explore the reef and all the wonders around it through special programmes led by One&Only dive experts and marine biologists, as well as hiking and private island exploration. Private weddings, events and conferences will be catered for in style with ample space for both intimate and larger groups.
Hayman Island has been a favourite destination for Australians since it was first developed by pioneering Australian aviator Reginald Ansett in the nineteen fifties. Now under Sol Kerzner’s deft management touch it is likely to have a much greater contingent of international guests as well. By taking on the management of the resort without having to shell out much greater amounts of capital to own it He is also following the preferred path for the majority of hotel groups today, where ownership of the real estate is completely split from the underlying business activity.
