Barack Obama

President Barack Obama and President Shimon Peres

The “President’s Medal” will be awarded to U.S. president Barak Obama

The president of the State of Israel, Shimon Peres, will present president Obama with the “President’s Medal”.

The ceremony marking this presentation will take place during the festive state dinner that will take place at the president’s residence to be attended by representatives of the Israeli public and senior members of the American government.

The medal will be awarded the president for his being a symbol and example of democratic values that accentuate the spirit of equality of opportunities in the American society; a true friend of the State of Israel who always stands by her side in times of crisis; on his unique and most significant contribution to the security of Israel both in cooperative strategic actions between the two countries as well as in the joint development of military equipment for defense against rockets and terror.  This has been actualized by the joint development of the “iron dome” defense system which has saved many Israeli lives.

The “president’s medal” is awarded to special individuals (private as well as organizations) who have made unique contributions to “correcting the world’s ills” or the image of the State of Israel

On the medal is engraved the north star which represents the delineation of a path, a candelabra representing the renaissance of the state.  At the top of the medal is engraved the expression: “Head and Shoulders Above” taken from chapter 9 of the first book of Samuel: “Selected and good with no man of the children of Israel better than he, head and shoulders above anyone of the people”.

The original gift that the Prime Minister will present to President Obama

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will present the president of the United States with an original present created by the Russel Barrie Institute of nano-technology at the Technion.  The gold plated chip is attached to a piece of Jerusalem stone from the period of the second temple and contains copies of the American declaration of independence and the Israeli one as well.

Engraving the chip was performed using accelerated atomic particles called ions and they melt particles at different locations on the very thin gold whose thickness is 20 nanometers and can be viewed only under an electron microscope in the form of dark spots which have exposed the silicon.  In this manner it is possible to transfer pictures onto the chip.

Translation of the original pictures will be done by means of special software developed by dr. Ohad Zohar.  The engraving was performed by Dr. Tzipi Cohen-Haymes together with a large team of experts.
