We usually remember actors based on the movies they starred in, like, Kate Winslet and Leonardo diCaprio from Titanic, Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense, and Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future. We base our impressions of these stars more on the characters that they have portrayed rather than who they are in real life.

We oftentimes forget the fact that, outside filming and walking the glamorous red carpet, (most) popular celebrities pretty much live a normal life. And like most normal people like us, these famous stars have hobbies. Some of them, though, have very bizarre hobbies that we never would not guess they’d be into, especially considering their wealth and fame. Let’s take a closer look at some of the popular A-listers in Hollywood and how they like to spend their free time.

Collecting Barbie Dolls

At first, you’d think that collecting dolls is far from being unusual. But if we tell you that it’s Johnny Depp who’s collecting Barbie dolls, you will see how strange it is for a grown man to be having such a hobby. The star behind blockbuster hits like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Pirates of the Carribean, and Edward Scissorhands revealed this hobby when he guested on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Back in 2015. He was 51 at the time.

Depp says he uses the dolls to test movie characters like Willy Wonka and Captain Jack Sparrow. He further added that he would play dolls with his daughter and test the characters on her. Unfortunately, she got tired of the whole thing and asked her dad to stop making voices and just play with the dolls the normal way! Depp said that was the day he stopped playing Barbie with her. But he also said he has “a lot of Barbies in storage.”

Playing Bingo Games

You’d be surprised to know that bingo is a favorite pastime of a lot of Hollywood stars. While a lot of them still host bingo parties, the recent popularity of bingo sites online and on mobile has made it much easier and convenient for stars to enjoy the many varieties of the game.

Sharon Osbourne, renowned television host at The Talk and judge at the X-Factor, and wife of rock star Ozzy Osbourne is another self-confessed bingo enthusiast. Her lucky bingo number is 25, which is also her position in the Sunday Times’ list of Britain’s richest women. On the contrary, her unlucky number is five, which is the number of times she failed to win the X-Factor during her stint as a judge.

Catherine Zeta-Jones, who starred in The Mask of Zorro, fell in love with bingo after her father won £100,000 at a game. Having come from a modest family, winning this bingo game was instrumental in developing Zeta-Jones’ talents, as part of the prize won was used to pay for her dance and ballet lessons. Up to this day, Zeta-Jones continues to host bingo parties and even taught her children how to play the game.

Collecting Old Typewriters

There are numerous collectors of vintage items in Hollywood, but the way Tom Hanks collects vintage manual typewriters is a bit unusual. Instead of keeping them in glass shelves for display, Hanks actually uses his antique machines to record his thoughts and observations. You’d think that beyond his famous films, such as Forrest Gump, Cast Away, and Saving Mr. Ryan, Hanks would be less serious during his free time. Apparently not.

But Hank’s love for the typewriter does not stop there. He also collaborated with Hitcents in 2014 to create an app that lets you type on your screen like you are typing on a manual typewriter. You can download the app on iTunes for free and the app works on both iPhones and iPads. Here’s a preview of the app:

It is amazing how the stars we adore on the silver screen can amuse us even as they live their actual lives. As they reveal their odd hobbies, they remind us that stars are just like us no matter how famous they get – people who like to have fun in our own unique ways.
