Carrie Fisher Died of Sleep Apnea and Used Drugs, Report

Carrie Fisher had publicly talked about her struggles with bipolar disorder and drug use, saying that “drugs made me feel more normal.”

 

Carrie Fisher’s death in December was caused by sleep apnea.

The actress used a combination of drugs, coroner’s officials said Friday, according to media reports.

the Los Angeles County coroner’s office also citing in a news release a buildup of fatty tissue in the walls of her arteries. the “Star Wars” star showed signs of “multiple drug use,” but no specifics were given. Investigators could not determine whether they contributed to her death.

In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, Billie Lourd, Carrie Fisher’s only child said:

“My mom battled drug addiction and mental illness her entire life. She ultimately died of it. She was purposefully open in all of her work about the social stigmas surrounding these diseases.

“She talked about the shame that torments people and their families confronted by these diseases. I know my Mom, she’d want her death to encourage people to be open about their struggles. Seek help, fight for government funding for mental health programs. Shame and those social stigmas are the enemies of progress to solutions and ultimately a cure. Love you Momby.”
