Scarlett Johansson Is The Top-Grossing Movie Star for 2016

Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson has topped Forbes’ list of the best grossing Hollywood box office stars in 2016. The actress’s films brought in $1.2 billion at the box office this year.

This statistic is clearly misleading since she was only in two movies, one of which, “Captain America: Civil War, ” grossed over $1.15 billion worldwide. And Scarlett — ScarJo to her fans — was only one of many in an ensemble cast where stars like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans were billed above her.

This is the problem with the list itself. Captain America co-star Robert Downey Jr.came in at number 2 — $50, 000 behind Scarlett — because that was the only movie which he was in in 2016. Other people who made the list were Margot Robbie #4 and Will Smith #10 because they were both in the comic book hit “Suicide Squad.” Henry Cavil and Ben Affleck both made the list on the strength of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

In fact, nine of the ten actors on Forbes’ list got there because they appeared playing either heroes or villains in movies based on comic books. And one was in the new Star Wars movie. And all of these films starred multiple famous actors.

So while we congratulate Scarlett Johansson, we must recognize the drawbacks of this list. And as a woman, ScarJo gets paid much less per movie than the men on this list.
