Ford acquires Israeli startup SAIPS for self-driving computer vision, machine learning 

Ford target fully autonomous vehicle for ride sharing in 2012; SAIPS founded in 2013

Car manufacturing giant Ford outlined a few of the ways it’s aiming to ship fully autonomous cars for ride sharing by 2021. Part of the plan involves acquisitions. Ford CEO Mark Fields revealed at a press conference that the automaker acquired SAIPS.

The Israel-based startup SAIPS has developedcomputer vision and machine learning . Its algorithmic solutions in image and video processing, deep learning, signal processing and classification will help Ford autonomous vehicles learn and adapt to the surroundings of their environment

SAIPS founded in 2013 by CEO Udy Danino, CTO Rotem Littman and US Branch Manager Noga Zieber Bullkich. No financial details of the acquisition were disclosed, and the company has not raised any funds to date. The compny will continue operating as an independent entity within the Ford corporation.

Vast majority of SAIPS engineers are graduates of elite IDF units (Talpiot, 8200) and all of them are with 10+ years of experience in development and management of complex algorithmic systems. SAIPS personnel has a proven track record of delivering top-notch solutions with flawless execution, according to the company website.

Ford CEO Mark Fields revealed at a press conference that the automaker also partnering exclusively with Nirenberg Neuroscience, to bring more “humanlike intelligence” to machine learning components of driverless car systems.

“The next decade will be defined by automation of the automobile, and we see autonomous vehicles as having as significant an impact on society as Ford’s moving assembly line did 100 years ago, ” said Mark Fields, Ford president and CEO. “We’re dedicated to putting on the road an autonomous vehicle that can improve safety and solve social and environmental challenges for millions of people – not just those who can afford luxury vehicles.”
