If you’re thinking about getting into the pest control business, you should consider moving to New Orleans. When it comes to sightings of rats, mice and cockroaches in homes, no other city in America beats The Big Easy. According to 2013 American Housing Survey data reported by the Seattle Times, 2.5 percent of homes in New Orleans reported a rat sighting over the previous 12 months while 35.6 percent found evidence of cockroaches.
Birmingham and Tampa also rank high in the pest league, though their problems are primarily roach-related rather than being rodent-ridden. Even though New York City often receives negative publicity regarding its flourishing rat population, it trails many other urban areas in terms of sightings. Only 1.7 percent of homes in New York reported a rat sighting over the past year, less than Memphis (2.3 percent), Austin (2.1 percent), Miami (1.8 percent) and Dallas (1.8 percent).
