Joaquin Phoenix considered for Jesus role in ‘Mary Magdalene’

Actor Joaquin Phoenix is in early talks to play to play Jesus in Garth Davis’ “Mary Magdalene”, joining Rooney Mara in the cast.

The three times nominated for an Oscar for “Gladiator”, portrayed Johnny Cash “Walk the Line” and “The Master” was also nominated five times for a Golden Globe. Insiders tell The Hollywood Reporter he 41-years-old Phoenix deal could fall apart, especially if there are scheduling issues.

Phoenix may joins the likes of Willem Dafoe, Jim Caviezel, Robert Powell, and Max Von Sydow, who have all played Christ, while New Zealand actor Cliff Curtis took on the role in this year’s (16) Risen.

“Mary Magdalene, ” described as “an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history”.

Production is set to being in the summer for an anticipated release in 2017.

The film’s production company See-Saw Films, led by Emile Sherman and Iain Canning, whose credits include “The King’s Speech”, is teaming with Universal Pictures Intl Productions on the project, reported Variety.
