Op-Ed: To Europeans, Jews are the ones guilty of anti-Semitism

The shocking results of a French survey that spanned the period before and after the Hyper Cacher attacks; 60 percent of the French believe that part of the responsibility for the growth of anti-Semitism in the country falls on the Jews themselves.

By Giulio MeottiThe weekly Journal du Dimanche threw a cultural bomb in the French debate. It is a survey entitled “Perceptions and expectations of the Jewish population.” carried out by Ipsos and commissioned by the Fondation du français judaïsme, to address the theme of “living together, ” one of the pillars of French Republican rhetoric.

60 percent of the French believe that part of the responsibility for the growth of anti-Semitism in the country falls on the Jews themselves. The realization of the poll-shock lasted a year and a half, and the interviews were conducted between July 2014 and June 2015. That includes both the period prior to and after the Charlie Hebdo attacks and the murders at the Hyper Cacher.

Among the reasons given for charging the Jews for the anti-Semitism that haunts them again (this year 10, 000 French Jews left the country) are their economic dominance, their media exposure and Israel’s “treatment” of the Palestinian Arabs.

The survey allows you to fully understand the depth of the new hatred of Jews across France. It is the return of the old argument of the Nazis that “the Jew is the cause of our misfortune”. It is the obsession that led the famous philosopher Martin Heidegger to write that the Jews “self destructed” in the Holocaust.

Never before have the rules of human coexistence been pushed so far as in the terrorist war against Israel, with the daily massacre of innocent human beings. Never before have any terrorist groups, not even in other long and bloody conflicts,  extended their open struggle against civilians to such a geographic extent. Never before, have ordinary citizens of Europe had been targeted for hate crimes. Never before, has the victim been blamed for the attacks against himself.

Against Israel and the Jews we are witnessing the revival of the glorious partnership of the “enlightened” liberals, the ones, who,  at least in words, are concerned about equality and democracy, human rights and the status of minorities, and the Islamists.

But more than the rude anti-Semitism of the people in the streets,  I find more chilling the selfishness of so-called Western intellectuals, who are ready to sacrifice the Jewish people on the altar of anti-Semitism for the second time, just to sell some more books.
