The U.S. will deploy special operations forces to Syria, defense officials said Friday, hours before President Barack Obama was expected to confirm what will be a major shift in its anti-Islamic State group efforts.

Fewer than 50 troops will deploy, administration officials have said, adding they will operate in a support role and not in direct combat.
