Baruch Dayan Haemet! The great actor of Star Trek fame Leonard Nimoy is dead at the age of 83. He died at his home Bel Air section of Los Angeles of end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Nimoy had been rushed to the hospital last week after having chest pains related to COPD. He attributed the illness to having smoked for decades; even though, he quit the habit more than 30 years ago.
Born to Yiddish speaking Orthodox Jewish immigrants from Ukraine in Boston, Nimoy is obviously best known for having played Mr. Spock on the original and most iconic Star Trek series. The actor had more than 130 acting credits to his name over more than 60 years. Before Star Trek he had appeared on episodes of science fiction shows like “The Outer Limits” and “The Twilight Zone.” After Star Trek he appeared on “Mission Impossible” for two seasons.
Fittingly, Nimoy’s final on screen performance was once again as Mr. Spock in 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness.”
In the 1980s Nimoy proved that he could also direct, first taking the helm of Star Trek’s 3 and 4. He would direct seven feature films in total, including 1987’s “3 Men and a Baby” with Ted Danson and Tom Selleck.
Nimoy’s most famous co-star, William “Captain Kirk” Shatner tweeted, “I loved him like a brother. We will all miss his humor, his talent, and his capacity to love.”
Condolence tweets came from all corner including NASA which posted, “RIP Leonard Nimoy. So many of us at NASA were inspired by Star Trek. Boldly go… “
The actor Josh Grad tweeted, “I am devasted to learn that #LeonardNimoy has passed. Despite your passing your legacy will indeed #LiveLongAndProsper.”
Brent Spiner, who played Data on Star Trek The Next Generation tweeted, “Farewell Leonard. Glad I knew you. Thinking of Susan, Adam, and his entire family. And his vast extended family of Star Trek.”
His co-stars from that show LeVar Burton and Marina Sirtis wrote, “God Bless You, Leonard Nimoy… May Angels guide thee to thy rest!” and “Woke up to the awful news that Leonard Nimoy passed. RIP to a true gentleman. Not many of those left in our Biz, ” respectively.
Finally the creator and star of “Family Guy” Seth MacFarlane tweeted, “Leonard Nimoy brought us one of the greatest, noblest characters in the history of American storytelling. Someone find the Genesis planet.”
