NY AG Schneiderman Will Prevent Slimy Landlords from Tossing Out Tenants

Schneiderman will defend the interest of rent-controlled tenants

Schneiderman

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Schneiderman!

Rent control has its benefits, for the tenants, but as neighborhoods become gentrified and landlords realize they could charge more rent, the worst of the bunch are increasingly using intimidation tactics to pressure tenants to leave. Some are subtle and others are downright shameless. It hasn’t been unheard of for some of them to tear out ventilation systems and boilers under the guise of routine repairs to make life hell for tenants so they leave. According to the New York Daily News, Steven Croman, a former cop, was accused of stalking tenants and harassing them, while Meyer Orbach, who owns 2, 000 units has been known to come up with ridiculous lawsuits against tenants to force them out. Eric Schneiderman is investigating 10 cases and the number of complaints is 200, triple what it has been in previous years.
