Fueled by strong growth in emerging markets, global smartphone shipments topped 300 million units for the second consecutive quarter. According to IDC, smartphone vendors shipped a total of 327.6 million units between July and September, representing a healthy 25% increase over last year’s September quarter.

Market leader Samsung saw itself under pressure from both sides of the market as the release of Apple’s new iPhones intensified competition in the high-end segment while Chinese vendors dominated emerging market sales. Consequently, Samsung was the only vendor among the Top 5 that suffered a decline in shipments compared to last year’s third quarter.
