The freshman series “Orange Is the New Black” racked up 12 Emmy nominations, the most for a comedy series this year, with voters recognizing several cast members of the Netflix prison-set show.
The show’s many nominees include Natasha Lyonne (“American Pie” films, Woody Allen’s “Everyone Says I Love You”), who plays the inmate and recovering drug addict Nicky Nichols.
Even though she is an essential member of the ensemble, who appeared regularly throughout the first season, Lyonne is nominated in the Guest Stars category. Choosing where to submit is usually a decision made by either the network and/or studio, or the actor and his or her reps — and it’s usually a strategic decision, and a gamble. Submitting Lyonne as a guest star undoubtedly paid off.
Just like first-time nominee Caplan, Lyonne was surprised by the news of her nomination, to the point she believed it was a prank.
“My manager called and was like, ‘You got a nomination.’ And I was like, ‘You’re making fun of me.’ I didn’t know why he would call to prank me at this hour, ” she told The New York Times. “I was like, ‘I won’t believe it until I see it in writing.’ And then [co-star and fellow nominee Taylor Schilling] called me and told me congratulations, and for some reason I believed her. Then I called everyone back and said, ‘Now I’m buying it.’ She wasn’t going to toy with me at that level.”
Biggest competition: Fellow-Orange cast member Uzo Aduba, who does a truly wonderful job as the kooky and violent, but still endearing Suzanne “Crazy Eyes.”
